Floating Down A River In My Dug-out Canoe
I've had a song on my mind for years. It's from the 80's and my failing memory tells me it's from a band like XTC. Has a chorus with lyrics like "Wo-o-o-o Oh Oh, floating down a river, floating down a river in my dug-out canoe". Think it had a bit of a reggae back-beat, but could be wrong. Anyone out there have any ideas?

River... river in the jungle... river in the jungle in my dugout canoe
Floating... floating down the river... floating down the river in the jungle in my dugout canoe
Hazards... meet a lot of hazards... meet a lot of hazards in the jungle in my dugout canoe
Dealing... dealing with the hazards... dealing with the hazards in the jungle in my dugout canoe

Heat... steam... spider-webs
Jungle creepers overhead
Look left... look right
Spied upon by jungle light

River... river in the jungle... river in the jungle in my dugout canoe
Floating... floating down the river... floating down the river in the jungle in my dugout canoe

The animals look hungry... look left look right
The animals look hungry... look out for the man-size bite
The animals look hungry... look left look right
The animals look hungry... look out for the man-size... out for the man-size... out for the man-size bite

River... river... jungle... river... jungle... dugout canoe
Floating... floating... river... floating... river... dugout canoe
Hazards... meet a lot of hazards... meet a lot of hazards in the jungle in my dugout canoe
Dealing... dealing with the hazards in the jungle in my dugout canoe

Middle eight
Heat... steam... spider-webs
Jungle creepers overhead
Then whisper twice

River... river in the jungle... river in the jungle in my dugout canoe
Floating... floating down the river... floating down the river in the jungle in my dugout canoe

Look out for the man-size... out for the man-size... out for the man-size... out for the man-size... (crescendo) out for the man-size... out for the man-size... out for the man-size bite!

Thanks Dan. You're a legend. No wonder I couldn't find the song in the XTC catalogue.

I hate to correct one of Dan's posts, but this song was NOT performed on an episode of The Young Ones.

King Trigger Re-Release The River

Music Industry Press Releases 25 Years on, this time it's going Top 40!

Please help and be part of Pop Music History?

Back in 1982 there was a real buzz around a new band, King Trigger! They sounded a bit like Bow Wow Wow, Adam & The Ants and Pig Bag. They supported the Thompson Twins and had rave reviews in Melody Maker and The NME. Appearances on "The Young Ones" and "The Max Headroom Show" helped to build up the momentum behind the band's first single. This is what was written at the time about them...

"King Trigger rattle out their irresistible, swooping dance beat."

However, the single was released on a compilation Hits LP so everyone who wanted it bought it that way so that when the single was released it failed to make the Top 40. Now, 25 years on, we have the chance to right the wrongs of 1982... There are fans out there that still remember the song, although they may not remember the name of the band or the title of the song!

Lost 80's Song, Help!

"King Trigger performed this song (if I recall) during an episode of early 80s english sitcom "the young ones".
These are available on Video, so if you're desperate to get the song, you'll find it that way."

Hi Dan

It's unfortunate the band's own publicist is perpetuating this error, but here are the musical guests that appeared on The Young Ones:

- Madness (two appearances - Boring and Sick, performing "House Of Fun" in the pub, and "Our House" on the street, respectively)
- Mot?rhead (Bambi, performing "Ace of Spades" in the living room)
- The Damned (Nasty, performing "Nasty" in the living room)
- Dexys Midnight Runners (Bomb, performing "Jackie Wilson Said" in the bathroom)
- Nine Below Zero (Demolition, performing "Eleven Plus Eleven" in the living room)
- Rip, Rig and Panic - (featuring a teenage Neneh Cherry performing "You're My Kind Of Climate" in the kitchen)
- Amazulu (Time, performing "Moonlight Romance" in the kitchen)
- Radical Posture (Oil, performing "Doctor Marten's Boots", with Alexei Sayle on vocals, in the living room)
- John Otway (Summer Holiday, performing "Body Talk" on the street)
- Ken Bishop's Nice Twelve - a one-off conglomerate which included Jools Holland, Stewart Copeland, Derek Griffiths, Chris Difford, Simon Brint, and Rowland Rivron (Cash, performing "Subterranean Homesick Blues" on the street.

No musical act appeared on the episode Flood; instead, a lion tamer performed an act in Mike's bedroom to fit the criteria for a variety budget.

Although the text is copied from Wiki, it accords with my memory (having worn the video tapes of the show thin and now having the DVDs).

Perhaps King Trigger have been confused with the similarly configured Rip Rig Panic. I understand KT were once unceremoniously pulled off stage to allow RRP to go on.

Neb,

The only way to really get to the bottom of this is to contact one of the band members. They would know for sure! I just did a quick search and so far I don't see any information other than the two links I posted above that supports King River appearing on The Young Ones.

For my two cents' worth, I'm inclined to agree with Neb. I don't recall ever seeing King Trigger perform this on The Young Ones. I guess memory becomes skewed over 25 years. Matter of fact, I only ever recall seeing the [rather strange] video on one or two music shows. If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, this is it.

They flogged it to death on Countdown, as I recall.

The comment made by band member Ian Cleverly in the link Dan put up suggests the song was only heard briefly, which is quite different to an appearance by the band.

I'm watching the 1st series to see if that's the case - so far I can confirm it isn't in the 1st episode.

However, if it was only incidental music, the BBC may have edited it out. Apparently they edited Subterranean Homesick Blues out of the Cash episode in the original video release.

The BBC often edit music out rather than get permission from the copyright holders - they took the Pink Floyd music/gag out of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy CDs, even though Douglas Adams was good friends with the band themselves.

Yes Neb, thanks to Countdown I think Australia must be just about the only country where the song charted.
