Early 70's
I haven't heard this in probably 25 yrs but have never forgotten it. I only have some of the lyrics:

"oh you know, I know, and everyone know
the landlord gonna throw us in the cold, cold, snow
root-toot-toot razz-a-matazz
what you gonna do when the rent come down"

Can anyone help?

sadly not either of those. Another forum suggests it could be a song called "Rufus Rustus Johnson Brown" Some of the lyrics match spot on but others do not. None of the release dates seem to match either.

This was on local "rock" radio in the fall of 1975, and it got a fair amount of play for a month or so. I was always so good with one hit wonders from the late 60's and early 70's but I am completely clueless on this one.....vexing!

Yeah sounds like it's a variation on this song which was originally written circa 1904 by Andrew Sterling and Harry von Tilzer. (Which may not help you very much!) Did your song have any of the 'chicken' verse? Can you describe what the singer or music was like?

Oh Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown
What ya gonna do when the rent comes round.
What ya gonna do? What ya gonna say?
What ya gonna do come the Judgement Day?
Oh you know, he know, we all know,
Landlord kick you out in the snow.
Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown
What ya gonna do when the rent comes round?

C- that's the way you begin
H- that's the second letter in
I- I am the third
And C is the fourth letter in that word
Well, O - K I'm fill'in in
E- I'm near the end.
Yea, C-H-I-C-K-E-N
That is the way you spell chicken

Early 70's
To Wolf 162

My mother sang that song and it's not from the seventies. She was born in 1899 and I'm 70 and heard it as a little kid. Here are the lyrics she sang:

Rufus, Rastus, Johnson Brown,
Whatcha gonna do when the rent comes 'round?
Whatcha gonna say, how you gonna pay,
You know you'll never have a cent 'till Judgement Day.
You know, I know, rent means dough,
The landlord's gonna put us out in the snow.
Rufus, Rastus, Johnson Brown,
Whatcha gonna do when the rent comes 'round?

I recognize that the song itself is much older than the 70s, but in the early to mid-70s there was a group that released their version of the song and it received a fair amount of "top 40" airplay on the radio. Not that it hit the charts in a big way, but I used to hear it on the radio fairly often in the fall of 1974 or 75. I would LOVE to hear that particular version again.....

i havn't heard this song in ages! there are diffrent versions of it though... i knew it as:

Rufus Rastus Johnson-Brown, whatcha gonna do when the rain comes down?
whatcha gonna do and whatcha gonna say, when u cant pay the rent 'till the rain goes away?
cause you know, and i know, and every body knows, that you cant pay the rent if you aint got the dough.
Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown, whatcha gonna do when the rain comes down?
C- thats the way it begins, and
H- thats the next letter in
I- your in the middle of the word, and
C- you've already heard
K- now your nearing the end, and
E- now your rounding the bend
C-H-I-C-K-E-N--thats the way you spell *clap, clap* Chick-en

i hope this helps you out abit... you may not the same version as me though :)

Early 70's
The only thing I could find on this song on iTunes came from a children's album. But I know this is an old song that was sung around the fire. About a day after my older brother died, I had a dream in which I saw him leading a band with joy as they played Rufus Rustus Johnson Brown. He was about eleven years older than me and was a musician who had his own band when he was in high school. So this song became important for me.

Here are the lyrics from the children's album:

RUFUS RUSTUS JOHNSON BROWN
[From a children?s album called ?Sing Out Summer Fun? by Mary Lambert.
The first part (Oh, whatcha gonna do) is sung by a boy named Spencer
and the Chicken part is sung by a girl named Tabitha.]

Oh, whatcha gonna do when the rain comes down?
Whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna say,
If you can?t pay the rent ?til the rain goes away?

Both you know and I know
And everyone knows.
That you can?t pay the rent
if you aint got the dough.

Rufus Rustus Johnson Brown
Oh, whatcha gonna do
When the rain comes down.

C, that?s the way it begins and
H, that?s the next letter in and
I, you?re in the middle of the word and
C, you?ve already heard and
K, now you?re nearing the end and
E, now you?re rounding the bend

C-H-I-C-K-E-N
Oh, that?s the way you spell
(pause) Chicken

(Then the two parts are sung together to finish.)
